Volunteer Opportunities
Many of the major projects and daily tasks at the Arizona Department of Mines and Mineral Resources
are assisted by volunteers! Last year, volunteers contributed nearly 10,000
hours of their time to help improve the departments two operational units: the
Mining and Mineral Museum and Mine Information Center.
Major activities recently completed in the Mining and Mineral Museum:
- 9,000 Treasure Bags assembled
- 690 Teacher Kits assembled with minerals and literature
- Assistance provided during special events: Prospectors Day February and Family Day in October
- Jewelry made for the Gift Shop
The Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum needs volunteers for the
following:
- Greet visitors at the front desk and assist in museum gift shop
- Assemble teacher kits and treasure bags
- Make jewelry for resale supporting the education program
- Help with constructing exhibits such as completing the outdoor stamp mill
- Support and maintenance in the lapidary shop and other museum areas
- Demonstrate mineral identification and other skills

The Arizona Mine Information Center seeks volunteers to assist with the
continuing development of the Center's library and mineral resource databases.
This project focuses on cataloging donated materials. Those materials often include unpublished
reports, exploration data, a variety of surface and underground maps, photographs,
government publications, reference books and other materials. These donations
require sorting, organizing, cataloging, preservation, and shelving or filing.
Recently we have started digitizing portions of the library for posting to our on-line digital library
to make these often rare materials readily available to researchers.
Although some knowledge of geology, mining, or library science is preferred, volunteers with
enthusiasm for organizing data and/or personal computer skills are also desired.
Special need: A volunteer with grant research and writing abilities.
